Selena Gomez stunned in a figure-hugging Celine gown at the SAG Awards on Sunday, showcasing her slimmer silhouette.
Social media quickly buzzed with comments about her noticeable weight loss, with some speculating she might be using ‘Ozempic’ or other weight loss aids. However, Selena has been open about the fact that her weight fluctuations are due to her lupus medication and an intestinal condition known as SIBO.
After seeing a since-deleted TikTok video that critiqued her appearance in November 2024, she responded, saying, “This makes me sick. I have SEBO in my small intestine. It flares up.” She added, “I don’t care that I don’t look like a stick figure. I don’t have that body. End of story. No, I am NOT a victim. I’m just human.”
SIBO, or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, occurs when the movement of food and waste in the digestive tract slows, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. The Mayo Clinic notes that this condition is often caused by surgery or disease, and symptoms can include bloating, stomach pain, and malnutrition.
Last year, Selena revealed she used to cry over body-shaming comments but now feels “proud” of who she is. She shared on Instagram, “I’m not perfect, but I am proud to be who I am… sometimes I forget it’s okay to be me.” In 2023, she also mentioned that her lupus medication contributes to her weight changes, explaining that she tends to “hold a lot of water weight” due to various medications. She encouraged her fans to practice self-love, even in challenging moments.
Following her Golden Globes appearance, Dr. Dennis Schimpf, a board-certified plastic surgeon, commented that while Selena appears thin, she does not look “wasting or gaunt,” which are typical signs of extreme weight loss. He noted that her weight loss could be a combination of a healthier lifestyle and dietary changes rather than just one factor like GLP treatment.
In September 2017, Selena announced she had received a kidney transplant, with her friend Francia Raisa generously donating her kidney after Selena suffered organ damage related to her lupus diagnosis.
