David Tennant kicked off the 2025 BAFTAs at the Royal Festival Hall with flair on Sunday, performing “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers.
Viewers praised the actor’s “brave” and “brilliant” opening as he made a spectacular entrance, surprising Selena Gomez in the audience. The Only Murders in the Building actress was visibly shocked as David strutted down the stairs, singing, “When I’m working, I know I’m going to be the man working hard for you, Selena.” Realizing he was heading her way, Selena’s jaw dropped before she burst into laughter and joined in clapping to the 1988 hit.
David also engaged with stars like Hugh Grant, Anna Kendrick, Camila Cabello, and Julie Walters, who all sang along with him. Dressed to impress in a black and burgundy quilted suit paired with a matching shirt and tie, he certainly made an impact.
Fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to call his performance “iconic” and “brave,” with comments like, “This is how you open an awards ceremony! Love David Tennant; he should host everything!” and “Best ever #BAFTA opening. Brave and brilliant by David Tennant.”
Later in the night, Adrien Brody and Mikey Madison took home the top awards for Best Actor and Actress, respectively. Adrien received his award for The Brutalist, while Mikey was recognized for her role in the independent film Anora.
Conclave won Best Film, triumphing in the unique category of Outstanding British Film Award, adding to their previous wins for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing. Adrien expressed gratitude to the British public in his acceptance speech, saying, “It has felt quite a bit like home lately.”
Director Edward Berger, upon receiving the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film, noted, “It is a huge honor, and I’m not even from here! We live in a time of crisis for democracy, and that’s why we make movies.”
Zoe Saldana accepted the Best Supporting Actress award with an emotional, expletive-laden speech for her role in Emilia Perez. Overwhelmed with tears, she exclaimed, “It’s so validating and a true honor,” despite being told her British accent wouldn’t work.
