Selena Gomez has confessed that she feels a sense of disillusionment following the controversy surrounding Emilia Perez, the musical crime film in which she stars.
The film found itself at the center of a media firestorm after resurfaced tweets from Gomez’s co-star, Karla Sofía Gascón, revealed racist remarks about the Muslim community and the late George Floyd. Adding to the tension, Gascón had also taken a swipe at Gomez herself, reportedly referring to the singer as a “rich rat” in a past tweet.
Addressing the scandal at the Santa Barbara Film Festival on Sunday—where she received the Virtuosos Award—Gomez, 32, reflected on the situation:
“Some of the magic has disappeared. But I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done, and I’m just grateful.”
She went on to affirm her commitment to the project:
“I live with no regrets, and I would do this movie over and over again if I could.”
Her comments come in the wake of a major social media fallout. Just weeks ago, Gomez lost over 700,000 Instagram followers after facing backlash for an emotional deportation video, where she broke down in tears discussing former President Donald Trump’s mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.
Meanwhile, Emilia Perez co-star Zoe Saldaña also expressed her disappointment over the controversy, admitting that the situation has cast a shadow over the film.
“I’m sad. Time and time again, that’s the word because that is the sentiment that has been living in my chest since everything happened,” Saldaña, 46, told Variety.
She continued: “I’m also disappointed. I can’t speak for other people’s actions. All I can attest to is my experience, and never in a million years did I ever believe that we would be here.”
As for Gascón, her historic Oscar nomination as the first trans actress to be recognized in the category has been overshadowed by the backlash.
Her past tweets resurfaced earlier this year, including a 2020 post in which she referred to George Floyd as a “drug addict swindler.” In another post, she criticized the diversity at the 2021 Oscars, writing:
“More and more, the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films. I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration, or the 8M. Apart from that, an ugly, ugly gala.”
With tensions still high, it remains to be seen how Emilia Perez will weather the controversy as awards season continues.
