Karla Sofía Gascón has denied the authenticity of a viral tweet that allegedly referred to her “Emilia Pérez” co-star Selena Gomez as a “rich rat.”
“That tweet is not mine at all,” Gascón stated during a Saturday night interview with CNN en Español. “I have never made any comments about my partner. I would never describe her in that manner.”
Variety reported that Gascón arranged the CNN interview herself, not through Netflix, the distributor of “Emilia Pérez.”
Last week, Gascón faced backlash after controversial tweets resurfaced, covering topics such as George Floyd, diversity at the Oscars, and Muslims. Among these was a tweet that claimed Gomez was “a rich rat who plays the poor bastard whenever she can and will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend (Justin Bieber) and his wife.” This statement drew attention from media outlets like People, but Gascón now asserts that the tweet is fabricated.
The day before, Gascón addressed the social media uproar on Instagram, reiterating that her words had been manipulated or taken out of context.
“They have succeeded in their goal of tarnishing my reputation with lies or misrepresentations,” she wrote on Saturday morning. “Anyone who knows me understands that I am not a racist (you might be surprised to learn that one of the most important people in my life, whom I love dearly, is Muslim), nor any of the things for which I have been judged and condemned without a fair trial or the chance to clarify my true intentions. I have always advocated for a more just society and a world filled with freedom, peace, and love. I will never support wars, religious extremism, or the oppression of races and peoples.”
