Taylor Swift’s ex-boyfriend has moved forward with his life and career following their 2023 breakup, and he hopes both her fans and his will do the same.
Joe Alwyn, 33, who Swifties believe was edited out of a recent video featuring the Grammy winner, opened up about their six-year relationship in an interview with The Guardian while promoting his new film, The Brutalist.
Alwyn and the “Shake It Off” singer met in 2016, the same year his debut film, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, was released.
When asked if he felt that dating a music superstar would overshadow his career, the actor responded, “I have tried just to focus on controlling what I can control.”
“From the beginning, I’ve aimed to concentrate on what matters to me: friends, family, and of course, work,” he shared.
He added, “The noise outside of that is something I think a lot of public figures try to ignore. If you let it in and allow it to affect you, you’re living from the outside in. And then you’re pretty much lost.”
The couple made efforts to keep their relationship private, though Swift’s fans believe that songs like “Gorgeous” from her 2017 album Reputation and “London Boy” from her 2019 album Lover are tributes to the British actor.
Attention from Swifties increased after it was revealed that Alwyn had writing credits on her acclaimed 2020 album Folklore, which won three Grammys, as well as on its follow-up Evermore, created during the Covid-19 lockdown. Alwyn, who won a Grammy for his contributions to Evermore, which took home Album of the Year, mentioned that he feels he is in a different place now.
“I have great family and friends and real things in my life; those are what keep me grounded,” he stated, adding, “I don’t know how else to say it; I’m just in a different room.”
The star of Kinds of Kindness suggested it’s time for fans to move on as well. “That’s something for others to do. We’re talking about something that’s in the past for me. So that’s for other people. That’s how I feel.”
Swift has certainly moved forward, as she has been dating NFL star Travis Kelce since the summer of 2023.
The Brutalist was nominated for seven awards at the 2025 Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture, Drama, and received nine nominations for the Critics Choice Awards.
