In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Selena Gomez opened up on everything from her relationship with Benny Blanco to her mental health, providing a unique glimpse into her personal life.
The 32-year-old actress claimed that she still manages to feel as like she has “a private life” despite having grown up in the spotlight, having begun appearing on Barney & Friends at the age of 10. This was three years before she was featured in the Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place.
“No one bothers me at [my half sister] Gracie’s soccer games, and I have places to go.” She said, “Unless I’m in the entire to-do list, nobody really bothers me.”
The Grammy nominee said she “hangs out with people who aren’t really in the business that much” when asked how she has managed tabloids and paparazzi for so long.
She also joked that she has gotten good at hiding her face beneath a scarf to avoid getting photographed on date nights, or trying to go incognito.
However, Gomez admitted that she feels more at ease sharing pictures and videos of herself with Blanco, 36, whom she started seeing last year, than she did previously.
She said, “I see a future with this person, and this is the safest I’ve ever felt in [a relationship].” “And people are less inclined to pursue you when you put a little bit out there.”
Nevertheless, she reminded her admirers that “people don’t see” everything about her and Blanco’s relationship.
When Gomez told THR that switching from singing to acting has given her “sanity,” she also became vulnerable.
“Talking about music that may have been a part of your story but isn’t anymore is really scary,” she said. And sitting there talking about myself is incredibly difficult. It is exhausting.
In sharp contrast, the actress claims she has never been asked a “personal question” throughout her publicity tour for her new movie, Emilia Pérez.
There hasn’t been a single personal question raised in any of the interviews I’ve done for this film, and I’ve wanted to simply say, “Thank you, because it’s been so refreshing,” and “I think that’s a space that is safer for me,” Gomez added.
The Who Says singer also acknowledged that being a big sister made it simpler for her to be content.
She remarked, “I knew I had to be a lot stronger than giving in to people’s chatter.” I’ve always made an effort to be vulnerable and powerful around her. I genuinely wish to improve her life in this world.
Gomez responded that they “don’t really get bothered” when they go bowling or go shopping at Target together, when asked if her 11-year-old younger sibling is aware of her success and notoriety.
She’s accustomed to it if we do. When she says, “I don’t really want to do what you do,” it does make me happy. Gomez went on.
Gomez promises to “support whatever her dreams are” if Gracie choose to follow in her footsteps.
“I’m so thankful that she hasn’t felt like I live a glittery life, because she wants that life,” the singer pondered, adding, “I knew very young that I wanted to be in the entertainment industry.”
