In the midst of her best friend Taylor Swift’s controversy with Donald Trump, Selena Gomez made a ‘childless cat lady dig’ on Sunday at the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards.
When Gomez went on stage to present Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series with her Only Murders in the Building co-stars and nominees Steve Martin and Martin Short, she couldn’t help but make a joke.
‘And Steve, let me just say what an honour it is for me to be working with someone who looks like he’s fallen and can’t get up,’ added Short, 74.
‘And let me say what an honour it is for me to be working with someone who looks like a former women’s tennis champion,’ shot back Martin, 79.
Selena replied, “And let me say what an honour it is to work with two guys who are this far away from being childless cat ladies.” Selena recently disclosed that she was unable to carry her own children due to health issues.
After Tuesday’s presidential debate, Swift turned to Instagram to support Kamala Harris, setting up a social media firestorm.
Many social media users supported the 34-year-old pop artist when she referred to herself as a “childless cat lady” in reference to heavily criticised comments made by Republican Presidential Nominee Donald Trump’s running mate, JD Vance.
One user responded to Swift’s unexpected endorsement on X (previously Twitter) with the message, “Childless cat ladies unite!”
She posed with her fluffy Ragdoll cat, Benjamin Button, to emphasise the jab.
After some Swifties criticised Taylor on social media for becoming close to her friend Brittany Mahomes while she was still supporting Donald Trump, Taylor’s message received positive feedback from her followers.
In response, Trump declared that he preferred “Mrs. Mahomes much better.”
The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards are scheduled to celebrate the finest in television on Sunday, September 15, at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
Eugene and Dan Levy, who are emceeing the ceremony for the first time as a father-son team, will make history.
The performers won their own Emmy Awards in 2020 for their work on the popular television show Schitt’s Creek, which they co-created and starred in for six seasons.
“The idea of being asked to host this year in an actual theatre was incentive enough for two Canadians who won our Emmys in a literal quarantine tent,” they wrote in a statement to Vanity Fair last month, confirming their hosting role.
“We’re thrilled to be able to raise a glass to this extraordinary season of television,” the couple said, adding that they were looking forward to spending the evening with everyone.
With 23 nominations, The Bear broke the record held by 30 Rock in 2009 with 22 nominations in the Comedy category, and Shōgun led the Drama category this year with 25 nominations.
Nominees for some of the night’s biggest honours include Quinta Brunson, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Aniston, Ayo Edebiri, Jeremy Allen White of The Bear, and Selena Gomez.
