During her first live TV performance in two years, Selena Gomez made her much-anticipated return on Sunday night at the American Music Awards with a performance of new music.
The 27-year-old launched the show with passion, putting on an intense choreographed dance routine and singing her new songs, Lose You to Love Me and Look at Her Now, although occasionally showing signs of nervousness.
Days after admitting that body shaming “messed me up,” Selena made a bold outfit change on stage, trading in her black dress for a form-fitting, sparkly corset.
Selena’s long-time closest friend Taylor Swift and her new best friend Halsey enjoyed the show immensely, dancing and singing along with her.
Selena looked stunning and self-assured on the red carpet earlier in the evening.
The singer politely posed for photographs with fans who were anxious to see their favourite stars as she walked the red carpet at the Microsoft Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.
Gomez had on a minidress in neon lime green and matching neon lime green shoes.
She accessorised her neck with a stacked diamond necklace while sporting her hair down in a bob cut.
Following her performance, Gomez posted a montage of behind-the-scenes pictures from the AMAs on Instagram, one of which showed off a brand-new tattoo on her leg.
The new ink was partially visible as she changed costumes on stage, but it was hidden from view when she was walking the red carpet.
Gomez tagged the tattoo parlour Bang Bang Tattoo in her Instagram image, which showed two hands in prayer with a rosary wrapped around them.
Days prior to her participation, she had discussed body shaming on the Giving Back Generation podcast.
The singer and actress Gomez revealed that she now faces “a lot of health issues, and for me that’s when I really started noticing more of the body image stuff.” Gomez was diagnosed with lupus in 2015.
“It depends on even the month, to be honest,” she said, adding that one reason for her weight changes was the medication she must take for the rest of her life.
