Every Kevin Hart and Rock film, ranked from worst to best

There isn’t a single terrible movie featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart, demonstrating their amazing onscreen connection. The two performers are incredibly amusing to watch on screen because of their complimentary senses of humour and the tension that arises from their “odd couple” pairing. Their starkly different heights are also a constant source of comedic gold. The five films in which Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart have collaborated so far range in popularity from big-budget adventures to family-friendly animated features to wide comedies.

Hart found popularity as a comedian, while Johnson began his career as a wrestler. These two celebrities come from distinct backgrounds in entertainment. The Mummy Returns from 2001 featured Johnson in the title role of The Scorpion King, which paved the way for him to become a major action star. Prior to making her breakthrough with 2014’s Ride Along, Hart had starred in humorous supporting parts in films such as The 40-Year-Old Virgin and the Scary Movie trilogy. Eventually, an astute producer concluded that Kevin Hart and The Rock could make successful films, and to their credit, the humorous collaboration has brought in billions of dollars globally.

Central Intelligence (2016)

The 2016 film Central Intelligence, starring Kevin Hart and The Rock, is the first about the reunion of two old classmates from high school. But one is an accountant (Hart), and the other is a CIA agent (Johnson), and the accountant is compelled to assist the CIA agent. Johnson plays the stereotypical tough guy in Central Intelligence, while Hart plays a surprisingly good straight man.

Central Intelligence got good reviews even though it’s officially the poorest of the Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart films. With a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it was the first film to demonstrate the depth of the duo’s collaboration. The Rock’s strong-arming of Hart’s character into risky circumstances started a formula that worked.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)

Accompanying Jason Statham in reviving the Fast & Furious franchise, Johnson was given a spinoff. The masculine dynamic conflict between Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw (Statham), as shown in Fate of the Furious, served as the inspiration for the television series Hobbs & Shaw. With over $700 million in revenue (Box Office Mojo), the movie was a commercial success, albeit less than previous entries in the franchise.

Hart plays an air marshal in a brief cameo in Hobbs & Shaw. Although his presence is by no means necessary to the plot, the air marshal assists the main protagonists, and his scene is among the funniest in all of The Rock and Kevin Hart’s films. Nevertheless, the 2019 film isn’t able to score higher because there isn’t much contact between the two.

Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)

After the Jumanji reboot became a phenomenal hit, the sequel Jumanji: The Next Level was all but guaranteed. The 2019 movie sees Johnson return as video game avatar Xander Bravestone and Hart as Franklin “Mouse” Finbar, and Danny Glover and Danny DeVito have been added to the ensemble cast. Jumanji:The Next Level is a fun adventure that follows the 2017 film’s bodyswap formula. While that familiarity also robs it of some of the freshness the first movie had, seeing Johnson and Hart play off each other while doing their best impressions of DeVito and Glover is a high point.

DC League Of Super-Pets (2022)

The movie DC League of Super-Pets starring Kevin Hart and The Rock made up for the mixed reviews given to Black Adam. The movie centres on the DC super-powered animals, such as Hart’s Ace, Batman’s pet, and Johnson’s Krypto, Superman’s pet. When Lex Luthor kidnaps the Justice League, they have to save the day. John Krasinski plays Superman, and Keanu Reeves plays Batman in the ensemble. Even without their physical humour, Johnson and Hart’s vocal performances alone are enough to convey the movie’s energy and chemistry, which is a credit to how effectively they complement one another.

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle (2017)

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the Kevin Hart and The Rock film that managed to launch a franchise, is the more successful of the two. The long-overdue follow-up to Robin Williams’ adventure picture from 1995, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, surprised everyone by becoming one of the best-loved blockbusters of 2017. The Jumanji board game is replaced in the film with a video game, and the narrative plays on the purposefully bland avatars of the teenagers imprisoned within the game while also commenting on gaming principles.

Karen Gillan and Jack Black round out Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle’s cast, and while the film — like most Kevin Hart and The Rock movies — rides on cast chemistry over the story, there’s a genuine warmth to it. According to Box Office Mojo, the 2017 movie was the pair’s biggest commercial hit together, grossing over $995 million.

Upcoming The Rock & Kevin Hart Movies

The next Dwayne “The Rock Johnson and Kevin Hart movie together is unclear at this point, but there are a few sequels that could happen. Similar to the tease of Johnson and Henry Cavill going head-to-head in Black Adam, DC League of Super-Pets featured Black Adam and his dog in the post-credit scene. While Johnson’s live-action DC plans fell through, it’s possible he could return in an animated sequel alongside Hart. There is also a possibility of Johnson and Hart reteaming for a sequel to their first movie together with Central Intelligence 2.

What We Know About Jumanji 4

As Jumanji was the biggest hit out of the Kevin Hart and The Rock movies, fans can expect the franchise to continue. Jumanji producers confirmed that the sequel will move forward after Johnson and director Jake Kasdan wrap production on the movie Red One, a Christmas-themed action comedy. Johnson and Hart are expected to return alongside other main cast members Jack Black and Karen Gillan. The Jumanji 4 story hasn’t been revealed, but it will likely riff off of Jumanji: The Next Level‘s mid-credits scene, in which some of Jumanji’s animals escape into the real world.

This marks the first time in the reboot movies that anything from the game has crossed over into real life and signals a more direct return to the original Robin Williams movie. This also opens the possibility that Jumanji 4 will see the video game avatars (played by Jack Black, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas, Johnson, and Hart) interact with the teenage kids who have been playing them. As for when Jumanji 4 could release, it’s likely not to happen for a while, as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart have several individual projects in development.
