The pop artist preselected the 9-year-old to wear the coveted fedora at Friday night’s performance in Sydney after her stepmother’s social media campaign gained momentum.
When the 9-year-old cancer patient was selected to receive the highly sought-after “22” hat from the megastar at her performance in Sydney this past weekend, her dream came true.
Natalie, Scarlett Oliver’s stepmother, says the Perth native is fighting an aggressive type of terminal brain cancer. On the singer-songwriter sensation’s Facebook fan page, she had expressed Scarlett’s wish to meet the star. According to a screenshot provided to X, Natalie stated on Swift’s fan page earlier this week, “Scarlett is a 9-year-old from Perth, and she was diagnosed in October last year with a high-grade glioma—this is a very aggressive brain cancer with no cure.” Natalie mentioned that they were able to obtain tickets on their own through “the power of social media and some generous people” after the Make-A-request foundation was unable to fulfil her daughter’s request to meet Swift. “Scarlett is very excited and would love to receive the 22 hat from Taylor, just like everyone else, I’m sure,” the statement continued.Swift stops her busy Eras Tour engagements to deliver a black fedora, which she dons during her rendition of “22,” a song from her 2013 album Red, to a fan who was chosen in advance.
“I just want her to experience everything in life and if anyone deserves a little happiness it’s her. Natalie said, ‘She deserves the whole world. On Wednesday, she posted a follow-up picture of Scarlett carrying a sign that said, “Taylor, may I have the 22 hat? Please.
“We would be thrilled to see this happen for our lovely, resilient daughter! You never know what’s possible,” she said, pleading for a large number of people to spread the article.
In a video posted to X after Friday night’s concert, Swift is seen leaning down from the stage to hug Scarlett and then places the hat on the girl’s head. Swift kisses Scarlett’s hand and then resumes her performance, to the sound of cheering fans. Swift will travel to Singapore the following week after wrapping up her record-breaking Eras Tour’s run of Australian dates tonight. The event on Friday night was postponed due to bad weather, but it happened on the same day that she revealed a second special version of her next album, The Tortured Poets Department, which will include the bonus track “The Albatross.” She had revealed a first special version of the new album featuring the bonus tune “The Bolter” a week earlier.
