Before making his contentious remarks about being a “homemaker,” kicker Harrison Butker of the Kansas City Chiefs expressed his optimism for the future of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s relationship.
In an interview that was rediscovered in March, he stated to EWTN’s “News in Depth,” “I hope they get married and start a family.”
After the 28-year-old’s club defeated the Cincinnati Bengals on New Year’s Eve, he bragged about meeting the “humble” and “gracious” hitmaker at a party.
Harrison Butker had expressed his aspirations for Travis Kelce’s future with Taylor Swift prior to his controversial remarks about being a “homemaker.”
He stated on EWTN’s “News in Depth” in March that he hoped they would be married and establish a family.
He remembered having a brief conversation about football with Swift, 34, during which she expressed her admiration for his ability to “kick the ball so far to the uprights.”
He said, “I was anxious to meet Taylor Swift because she’s so famous.” “Yet, it was an amazing experience, and I have nothing but praise for her.”
Despite not being a Swiftie, Butker claimed that her 2022 song “Bejeweled” is his favorite because he likes the line “familiarity breeds contempt.”
The kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs called Swift “humble.”
He remembered her from a celebration after the Chiefs’ New Year’s Eve victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.
It’s interesting to note that the NFL athlete referenced precisely the same line during his commencement speech at Benedictine College on May 11.
Throughout her commencement speech, Butker touched on a number of topics, such as abortion, women in the job, damaging gender stereotypes, and Pride Month.
At the start of his outburst, the three-time Super Bowl winner stated, “It is safe to say that over the years, I have gained quite the reputation for speaking my mind.”
The athlete went on, saying that Pride Month is one of “the deadly sins,” and that “things like abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia as well as a growing support for degenerate cultural values and media all stem from the pervasiveness of disorder.”
Butker recounted how his ability to “kick the ball so far to the uprights” amazed the 14-time Grammy winner.
He remarked, “I was anxious to meet Taylor Swift because she’s so amazing.”
Subsequently, he conveyed to the female graduates that “homemaker” need to be their “most important title.”
Butker said, “I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world. Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world.”
“I can assure you that my lovely wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say that she felt her life began when she began to live out her calling as a mother and a wife.”
“But it was a great experience and I can’t say enough great things about her,” the three-time Super Bowl winner added.
Butker proclaimed “Bejeweled” by Swift to be his favorite song.
In addition, he urged the males in the audience to “be unapologetic in your masculinity” and “fight against […] cultural emasculation.”
Butker acknowledged Swift’s song at one point, stating, “As my teammate’s girlfriend says, ‘Familiarity breeds contempt.'”
Swifties and Chiefs supporters united on social media to denounce the football player for remarks he made that were misogynistic.
Harrison Butker, a man I had never heard of before today, did a fantastic job in just 20 minutes of bigotry and misogyny-filled remarks to become one of the most loathed persons in North America. Fuck this individual. This is crazy, a user said on X.
He claimed he loved the lyric, “Familiarity breeds contempt.”
Following his misogynistic remarks at Benedictine College’s commencement, Butker is under fire.
Another person commented, “This NFL player’s terrible speech has a quote from Taylor Swift before telling women they should be homemakers and support their man’s career. That’s one of the worst parts,”
In a statement issued after Butker’s speech, the NFL’s senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, Jonathan Beane, criticized it.
Harrison Butker delivered a speech in his individual role. The NFL as an organization does not share his opinions. The NFL is unwavering in its dedication to diversity, which strengthens our league.
Butker has not yet addressed the criticism.
