After being the first box office hit of 2024, Jason Statham’s The Beekeeper has found popularity on streaming services. The R-rated action film, which was directed by David Ayer, stars Statham as Adam Clay, a former member of The Beekeepers, an elite special forces unit, who launches a campaign of retribution after a close friend falls for a con. Along with Josh Hutcherson, Jeremy Irons, and Emmy Raver-Lampman, the movie brought in $152.7 million at the box office when it opened in theaters in January.

The Beekeeper was the ninth most watched streaming title in the United States for the week of April 25–May 1, according to new data from Reelgood. The film, which can be watched on MGM+ right now, is better than Ripley on Netflix but not as good as movies like Argylle, Shōgun, and Dead Boy Detectives. Reviews for The Beekeeper were largely positive, with praise going to the action, Statham’s consistently dependable movie star appeal, and the film’s shamelessly ridiculous use of jokes about bees. Although the picture has a good 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes thanks to its favorable reviews, its true success was with viewers. As of this writing, the movie has a solid 92% audience score, indicating that it was well-received by most viewers. With the exception of 1998’s Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Statham’s audience score is the highest of his career while the critics’ score of 70% is his highest since 2015.

It is clear that the enthusiastic reception from the audience contributed to the positive word-of-mouth that helped The Beekeeper reach a global gross of about $153 million. Considering that the movie was made on an estimated $40 million budget, it is unquestionably successful and demonstrates Statham’s enduring power as a leading man. Even while Clay’s persona isn’t all that dissimilar from the other tough action heroes that Statham has portrayed, Ayer has undoubtedly created an engaging world for him and provided some entertaining, gritty action in the process.

The Beekeeper’s conclusion concludes the main narrative, but given its box office success, it begs the question of whether a new action franchise could be born out of it. Although a sequel hasn’t been given the go-ahead officially, it’s possible that Ayer and Statham will work together again in the future to carry on Clay’s story and expand the world. Even while a sequel to The Beeekeper isn’t a certain just yet, it’s clear that people are loving the movie now that it can be streamed at home.

The Ideal Match Is A Beekeeper

Since The Transporter came out in 2002, Statham has virtually been a mainstay of the action film genre. In the end, Statham would play the lead in three Transporter films and also feature in two Crank movies and two Mechanic movies, which are all centered around him. The actor has recently joined a few more recent series where he either plays a supporting role or isn’t the main focus of the films.

Statham portrays Deckard Shaw in the Fast & Furious franchise, although he is but one member of a much bigger group. Fast & Furious 11, which may be the last entry in the series, is also getting ready for release. Statham was also set to succeed Sylvester Stallone as the Expendables franchise leader, although any potential for further sequels has probably been dashed by the poor box office receipts of Expend4bles last year. Unquestionably profitable, the Meg franchise stars Statham as diver Jonas Taylor. However, the story seems to be more about massive, ancient sharks wreaking havoc than it does about Statham.

Production on Fast & Furious 11 is scheduled to begin in 2025, with a 2026 release date.

Therefore, it has been a while since Statham had a lucrative, Transporter-like franchise of his own. With positive crowd reactions and strong reviewer evaluations, The Beekeeper has a great chance to close this gap. With The Beekeeper, Ayer has demonstrated that he knows how to film Statham in action and how to capitalize on the actor’s strengths as an action star. Clay may not be breaking the pattern in terms of depth or his bigger narrative.

Is The Beekeeper 2 Likely?

Perhaps An Announcement Is Coming

So far, there’s been no official confirmation regarding The Beekeeper 2, but there’s certainly reason to be optimistic. The film’s box office alone clearly demonstrates that there’s an appetite for more. While Ayer hasn’t offered a definitive response regarding the status of a sequel, he did say in an interview with Inverse earlier this year regarding the larger Beekeeper mythology and universe that “there’s so much room to explore.”

Statham currently has two movies in his future, including Fast & Furious 11 and Levon’s Trade, the latter of which Ayer is directing. The actor and director evidently have a positive working relationship, which also bodes well for a sequel to The Beekeeper. It remains to be seen whether the 2024 action thriller will get a follow-up, but it wouldn’t be surprising if an announcement arrives over the next few months regarding the continuation of Clay’s story.
