People know her for using her songs to talk about her relationship problems and settle scores.
And with a little help from US stars Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles, Taylor Swift’s latest hit once again shows how painful it is to hear about breakups.
Millions of Ms. Swift fans went crazy when the video for her song “Fortnight,” which is the lead single from her new album “The Tortured Poets Department,” came out early Friday morning on YouTube.
This is the 34-year-old singer’s first record since her breakup with British actor Joe Alwyn, which happened six years ago. In songs like “So Long, London,” she is said to be angry at him.
Even the name of the record, which is Alwyn’s first since 2022’s Midnights, is a joke about the name of the WhatsApp group she is in with actors Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott. They call it the Tortured Man Club.
Matthew Healy, the “bad boy” lead singer of The 1975, and Taylor Swift had a short relationship with him, also doesn’t get away. Swifties, the singer’s biggest fans, think he inspired the song “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.”
The singer said the album was a collection of new songs that showed “events, opinions, and feelings from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time—one that was both and sad in equal measure.” After that, she said that time in her life was over, adding, “The chapter closed and boarded up.” Once the wounds are fixed, there is nothing to get back at someone or settle an old score. We can be free of our saddest stories once we’ve told them.
Her style is to leave fans wondering about hidden meanings in all of her work. The release of the Fortnight video, in which she sings with US rapper Post Malone, was no different.
The video makes it seem like Ms. Swift has been going because love is so hard for her. She is seen lying on a bed with no cushion while being chained to the railing. It looks like she is in an asylum.
A doctor comes in with a bottle of pills that say “Forget him” on the label. After taking a pill, Ms. Swift is set free. Hawke and Charles play doctors while Ms. Swift is chained to a table in scenes that look a lot like Frankenstein.
Along with the Fortnight video, the singer posted 14 short video clips of her life over the past two weeks on YouTube Shorts. One showed her having a drink, and another showed her at the gym. She told her fans that they should do what she did and take the #ForAFortnight dare.
