There has long been overlap between Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish, two Grammy-winning pop superstars who began as remarkable young talents and went on to become worldwide superstars.

Swift and Eilish, who made their first albums aged 16 and 17, respectively, have regularly praised one another’s accomplishments in the business. Even at Billboard’s 2019 Women In Music, Swift gave Eilish the reins by giving her the Woman of the Year Award and the song “What Was I Made For?” (In 2011 and 2014, Swift had already won.)

Swift mentioned the next generation of musicians in her 2014 award speech, and she brought up the comment when she introduced Eilish five years later.

Swift recalled in 2019 that she had said, “This exact quote from my speech was, ‘I really just feel like we need to continue to try to offer something to a younger generation of musicians, because somewhere right now, your future woman of the year is probably sitting in a girls choir or taking piano lessons.'” “We have to take care of her right now, today.”

“I have since learned that, at that precise moment, an 11-year-old girl in California was actually taking piano lessons and participating in the girls choir. This year, at the age of 17, she was named Woman of the Year,” the speaker said. She goes by Billie.

Notwithstanding their tender times, the couple gained notoriety in March 2024 when people mistook Eilish for Swift and her “wasteful” packaging. However, Eilish later dispelled the accusations, demonstrating that their relationship is amicable.

Eilish disclosed that “Picture to Burn” was among her childhood favorites; she did not discover Swift was the author of the song until much later.

“This song was one of my favorites when I was maybe four years old, if not older. Probably around six,” Eilish revealed in 2020 on her “me & dad” radio show. It is absurd. It has a very rustic feel. I am thinking, “Wow,” as I listen to it now. I was completely unaware of how rural this was. But I thought this song was so badass back then, so I really liked it. It was cruel and so cool, in my opinion. It was simply wonderful.

She continued, “I actually didn’t know it was Taylor Swift until this year.”

Reacting to Swifties’ Suspicion That Eilish Had Dissed Swift

In March 2024, Eilish spoke out about “big artists” using “wasteful” packaging without regard for the negative impact on the environment.

Swift, for her part, has been known to rerelease rerecorded versions of her early albums as well as put out multiple physical and digital versions of her studio recordings.

Swifites were quick to interpret Eilish’s comments as a dig at Swift — which Eilish hit back at.

“OK so it would be so awesome if people would stop putting words into my mouth and actually read what I said in that billboard article,” she wrote. “I wasn’t singling anyone out, these are industry-wide systemic issues.”
