‘Terrible’: Tony Khan Criticized for Not Following Dwayne Johnson WWE Rating Formula With Mercedes Mone After Surprise Raw Return

The plot has gotten more intriguing ever since Dwayne Johnson made an incredible return to WWE. Remarkably, Johnson made a comeback and joined the TKO group, which owns the UFC and WWE, as a board member in January. Millions of people have followed him from his days as “The People’s Champion” to his current status as the “Final Boss.” WWE’s ratings rose as a result, and it was clear that its audience grew over time.

But the same may be said of AEW, the competitor company. Since 2023, Tony Khan has signed a number of outstanding prospects. It seems like they still need to raise their ratings despite their best efforts. Khan’s Mercedes Mone, or Sasha Banks, marketing approach is currently being questioned by a lot of people.

Bryan Alvarez talks about WWE’s “clever” advertizing

In addition to Johnson’s comeback, Sasha Banks joined AEW and re-entered the professional wrestling ring under the alias Mercedes Mone.

Bryan Alvarez touched on these topics and talked about the rival companies’ marketing approaches.   Alvarez stated, “The problem is, they’ve had advertising for The Rock every time he’s been on Smackdown; they’re advertising The Rock for next week’s Raw,” in an interview with F4WOnline. I think it was quite smart of him to make an unexpected appearance on a show when he was not advertised. As a viewer, you’re thinking, “I need to watch this show every week,” if you missed it. In contrast to Tony Khan, he was enthused by WWE’s approach with The Rock and chastised the latter for using ineffective marketing.

“AEW ought to have done this with Mercedes right after her debut, and they were going to have her come back at the conclusion of the show.” It was disappointing that she failed to disclose her coming out at the end of the presentation. Additionally, he said, “If you look at the rating pattern, everyone turned on the show, and the last quarter did, like, it was terrible.”

Tony Khan reportedly signed major AEW star to a similar deal as Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson

Alvarez was obviously disappointed and had higher expectations. Many promos were shown despite the build-up to the Bank’s ultimate decision between AEW and WWE. This resulted in a lack of enthusiasm for her real debut.

Additionally, he expressed how WWE had initially said that The Rock’s attendance for Raw night was over. However, he made an unexpected appearance at the end of the show. Alvarez discussed proper marketing practices.

Alvarez weighs in on the right way to advertize

According to Alvarez, it’s all about balance. While consistent advertizing is crucial, sparingly sprinkling in significant surprises – perhaps around 5% of the time – adds that extra magic. It’s essential not to rely solely on big surprises, according to the professional wrestler and martial artist. Instead, he suggested strategically saving them for when they’ll have the most impact. “Advertize! Advertize! Advertize! Advertize! Advertize! And 5% of the time do some gigantic surprise but you shouldn’t be doing a giant surprise 100% of the time. Like save your surprises, use them for when you need them,” he opined.
