The 2024 Oscars are making me feel like Furiosa!
During Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony, Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth—who co-star in the upcoming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga—reunited on stage to present the Best Animated Short and Best Animated Feature awards.
The War Is Finished! The Boy and the Heron, who were inspired by John and Yoko’s music, won each of their respective categories.
Before playing the lead character of Furiosa, Taylor-Joy, 27, costarred with Tom Hardy and Nicholas Hoult as the imperator in the 2015 action adventure film Mad Max: Fury Road, which won an Oscar.
On May 24, the prequel will make its theatrical premiere. Taylor-Joy plays a younger version of the beloved character. Hemsworth, 40, plays Warlord Dementus in the 2022 film. According to the plot, he commands “a great Biker Horde” that takes in the teenage Furiosa as the world ends.
According to the film’s press announcement, the much awaited sequel to Mad Max: Fury Road is a “standalone action adventure that will reveal the origins of” Furiosa.
Taylor-Joy said to PEOPLE, “I think both of us ended up in a situation where we were both so respectful of each other that we did not want to reach out prior [to filming],” in response to the question of whether she approached Theron about playing Furiosa.
The actress of Queen’s Gambit went on to say that she and Theron, 48, would get together for dinner and “swap war stories” about Furiosa as soon as she wrapped up promoting The Menu, a 2022 movie in which Hoult, 34, costarred.
The Hollywood Reporter was then informed by the Bombshell actress that she “totally get(s)” why Taylor-Joy did not get in touch with her regarding the part and that she was full of praise. Regarding Taylor-Joy, Theron remarked, “One of the greatest f—ing actresses is picking up something that I only imagined.”
This year’s Oscar presenters include Lupita Nyong’o, Jennifer Lawrence, Zendaya, Ariana Grande, Brendan Fraser, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michelle Yeoh, and more.
Jimmy Kimmel served as the host for the 96th Academy Awards, which were broadcast live from Hollywood, California’s Dolby Theatre on Sunday.
