Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Jon Batiste, Lana Del Rey, Miley Cyrus, Olivia Rodrigo, SZA, and Taylor Swift were all contenders for this year’s prestigious award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards have awarded the much sought-after gramophone for the song of the year.

Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas won the award for their emotionally moving ballad, “What Was I Made For?”, used in the Barbie movie. The 22-year-old was surprised when she received the golden statue while on stage.

“Oops, oh no, wow my goodness. “That is incredibly foolish,” the pop star remarked as she commenced her statement. “I observed the expressions on everyone’s faces and then whispered to myself, ‘There is absolutely no possibility.'”

“I would like to express my admiration for everyone in this category. The list of individuals included some extraordinary people, exceptional artists, and remarkable music.” “I am currently experiencing a state of intense emotional turmoil,” she exclaimed, expressing her appreciation for the other candidates in the same category, including Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night,” Jon Batiste’s “Butterfly,” Lana Del Rey’s “A&W,” Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers,” Olivia Rodrigo’s “vampire,” SZA’s “Kill Bill,” and Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero.”

Eilish also acknowledged her family, including her parents who were present at the awards ceremony, and Finneas, 26, whom she referred to as “my closest confidant.”

“I am utterly astonished,” Eilish said, expressing gratitude to Barbie filmmaker Greta Gerwig for creating “the finest film of the year.”

Finneas also chimed in, expressing that the duo finds it challenging to perceive themselves as deserving of their achievements. He further conveyed their deep sense of humility and gratitude.

Eilish, 22, and her brother/collaborator Finneas O’Connell have been nominated for a song of the year award for their work on the Barbie movie soundtrack, specifically for their contribution to the song “What Was I Made For?”. This nomination is only one of the numerous honours they have won. The popular song, featured prominently in the film, serves as a turning point for Margot Robbie’s character as she embraces her true self and discovers her desired path. Since its debut in July 2023, the song has resonated with audiences.

The pop artist has already expressed the significance of the song, discussing in interviews and speeches how her involvement in the film directed by Greta Gerwig aided in alleviating her self-doubt during that time. In an interview with Zane Lowe of Apple Music, she candidly expressed, “To be completely honest, both Finneas and I experienced a prolonged phase of lacking inspiration during the past winter.” We have continued our efforts to work and create things. Frankly speaking, that song was the first piece of music we had composed in a considerable amount of time. 

She later realised the profound resonance between the song’s lyrics and her own experiences. “I thought, ‘This accurately represents my emotions.” “I unintentionally uttered those words,” she stated.

The poignant composition, which has also been nominated for record of the year and other accolades at the Grammys, already won the esteemed title of best original song at the 2024 Golden Globes. It is presently in contention for the best original song category at the 2024 Academy Awards.
