Billie Eilish accompanied a Barbie doll to the Grammy Awards.
Eilish, a 22-year-old artist, performed her song “What Was I Made For?” from the Barbie soundtrack at the 66th annual Grammy Awards held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday. The song had received five nominations.
The pop artist appeared reminiscent of a classic Barbie doll during her performance, donning a green dress and coordinating jacket with a ’60s aesthetic. The jacket was adorned with pink embellishments that harmonised well with the satin pink scarf adorning her hair.
The singer-songwriter delivered a nuanced yet impactful performance, accompanied by her brother and partner Finneas O’Connell on the piano, as well as a group of string musicians. The minimalism facilitated the amplification of her soft voice, accentuating the impact of the song’s lyrics pertaining to the exploration of one’s life’s mission.
Prior to the performance of the “Bad Guy” vocalist, she had already received one award. Prior to the commencement of the televised segment of the awards ceremony, the melancholic pop ballad was honoured with the prize for the best song composed for visual media.
Eilish received six nominations at this year’s award ceremony, encompassing categories such as record of the year, best music video, best song created for visual media, best pop solo performance, song of the year for “What Was I Made For?”, and best pop duo/group performance for “Never Felt So Alone” featuring Labrinth.
“What Was I Made For?” received nominations for both the Academy Award for Best Original Song and the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Original Song. The single received the prestigious Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song.
Following her victory at the Golden Globe Awards, Eilish expressed gratitude towards her family as well as the esteemed Barbie filmmakers Greta Gerwig, Noah Baumbach, and Margot Robbie.
“Almost a year ago, we were presented with the movie, and during that period, I was profoundly unhappy and despondent. However, composing that song provided me with some solace,” she expressed. “A year has passed and now we find ourselves in a truly surreal situation.” I feel quite fortunate. I feel quite fortunate and appreciative, and your presence in this room is quite intimidating, but I am deeply grateful to all of you.
Eilish has garnered a total of 25 Grammy nominations throughout the course of her career and has won a commendable seven prizes since the release of her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? in 2019. She received the highest accolades for her first work, including the titles of best new artist, best pop vocal album, record of the year, and song of the year for “Bad Guy.”
In 2021, the accomplished musician received both an Oscar and a Grammy for their work on “No Time to Die,” a song featured in the James Bond film of the same title.
The lineup for the Grammys night includes Olivia Rodrigo, Dua Lipa, Joni Mitchell, Billy Joel, Travis Scott, SZA, Burna Boy, U2, and a duet by Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman.
Christina Aguilera, Lenny Kravitz, Lionel Richie, Mark Ronson, Maluma, Meryl Streep, Samara Joy, Taylor Tomlinson, and Oprah Winfrey will be presenting.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be broadcasted live on CBS and Paramount+ on Sunday evening from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
